Young people's development workers
North Yorkshire has a lot to offer young people, it's a good place to be and it's getting better. More and more opportunities are being created to raise the profile of young people throughout society, and to help them express their views in a way which people will listen to. Pretty much every young person's service, whether that's school, youth club or the library etc, now work to involve young people in how they are run. After all, the customer knows best and it's young people that are on the receiving end!
North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has lots of ways to try and involve young people ... school and youth councils, management groups, Keyfund, questionnaires and web consultations.
Over the last five years, NYCC has employed young people's development workers (YPDWs) with the aim of transforming young people's participation in services, and the wider community. The YPDWs have left a legacy of participation which should allow for more opportunities for young people to be involved, rather than less. Tools have been developed, lessons have been learned and lots of training has been delivered, all of which equips staff and services to facilitate young people's involvement at every level.
This year's YPDWs built on the work of previous years: carrying out many consultations, supporting partner agencies and delivering training on behalf of the Children's Trust. They also made their own mark and have been the first crop of YPDWs to get right out into the community to inform young people of their right to participate and local opportunities available. They have worked with over 94 separate groups and informed over 5000 young people across the County, through school assemblies, youth clubs and at CultureShock where they transformed into the 'Participation Pixies'!
The YPDW role has given many people valuable insights into how children's services operate and has inspired further career choices for working with children and young people. The roles have also been key in challenging perceptions of not only participation, but also young people themselves.
This year's YPDWs were the last batch, we wish them the best of luck, as participation evolves with the changing times and we look to the future.
