Politics

Once you are 18 years of age you are able to vote. This means you will be allowed to say who you would like to represent you on either the local Council or in Parliament.

Am I bothered?

Well you should be because;

  • The right to vote is denied to millions of people in the world.
  • Until 1872 the only people who could vote were land or factory owners and similar people.
  • Working men could not vote until 1867, and it was not until 1894 that all adult males were allowed to vote.
  • Women over 30 only got the right to vote in 1918, and it was not until 1928 that all adults over the age of 21 were allowed to vote.
  • In 1969 the voting age was reduced to 18.

Politics affects everyone, including you!

Do not throw away your right to vote. Ensure that you are on the voters' list - your name can be added once you are 16.

Going to college or university - where should I register?

If you are a student living away from home, you can register to vote at your home address and where you live at university or college.

This means that you have a choice about where you vote, but remember, you can only use your vote once in any single election.

Further information on voting is available from your local council (check out the external links).
